He was the sole reason why Ted got his first skyscraper deal working, and a reason for us to learn why to not be like him. I am talking about, of course, the legendary Bryan Cranston as Hammond Druthers in How I Met Your Mother!
Prior to his role as Walter White in Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston had a guest role in HIMYM as the head architect of the firm in which Ted worked.
Sandwich University
We first get a glimpse of Bryan Cranston as Hammond Druthers in Season 2, Episode 6 of How I Met Your Mother, known as “Aldrin Justice”. He is complaining about no horseradish on the roast beef to an intern when he snidely remarks “I guess you were sick the day they taught you that at sandwich university!”
Hammond’s Birthday
Hammond’s attitude had brought a lot of trauma into the office – even a child with ice cream wasn’t spared. After his plan of a penis-shaped tower being rejected, Ted was appointed the project lead due and Hammond had to work under him.
Ted tried to fire him when he came back late for lunch but the office surprised Hammond with a cake for his birthday. No justice today Ted! Check it out in the “Columns” which is Episode 13, Season 2 of How I Met Your Mother.
“No Pants” Hammond
Ted got another chance to fire Hammond when found him in the office alone…with no pants. Hammond had got into a fight with his wife and got kicked out of his house. Ted being Ted, he didn’t fire him when found out he was sleeping in the office, but actually gave him a place to stay.
Hammond Loses it All
Even after Ted and Hammond became “friends”, he was still giving him a hard time at work. Ted had finally had enough and was about to fire him for the third time when Druthers was served with divorce papers from his wife and found out his dog was dead.
All of a sudden, Druthers clutches his chest. Ted thinks he is faking a heart attack so he fires him anyways as he falls to the ground. Turns out, he wasn’t faking!
Hammond in Chicago
Bryan Cranston returns as Hammond Druthers in Season 9, Episode 9 (“Platonish”) when he calls Ted from Chicago. As fate would have it, he was offering Ted a job at the architecture firm he was working at. As we all know, this changed the whole gang’s future at the end of How I Met Your Mother as Ted accepts the offer.
Bryan Cranston also guest appeared on the hit show “Seinfeld” as Dr. Tim Whatley!
