All TV shows have takeaways – something that we keep to ourselves forever. Subliminally or consciously, they influence us. How I Met Your Mother quotes that remain with us even after we stop watching.
The show offered endless moments and endless lessons as each character developed. To highlight just a few of those lessons is nearly impossible. Still, if we have to pick one from each character, this list would be it. So, challenge accepted! Below are the best quotes from each main character in How I Met Your Mother.
Ted’s How I Met Your Mother Quote
When you love someone, you don’t stop…ever.
This How I Met Your Mother quote is found in Season 9, Episode 17 (Sunrise).
Before a stir-crazy Jeanette throws away Robin’s locket, Ted exclaims these beautiful words, explaining to Jeanette why he is still hung up on Robin.
“Caring about someone, beyond all rationality, and wanting them to have everything they want, no matter how much it destroys you, is love. When you love someone, you don’t stop. Ever. Even when people roll their eyes or call you crazy. Even then. Especially then. You don’t give up. If I would take the entire world’s advice, and move on, and find someone else, that wouldn’t be love. That would be some other disposable thing, that is not worth fighting for.”– Ted Mosby
After all the years, hearing these words from Ted’s mouth about Robin shows how strongly he feels for her. This is evident in the end, as they re-unite despite everything that came in between over the years.
Robin’s How I Met Your Mother Quote
Start believing in chemistry…
You can check out this How I Met Your Mother quote from Robin in Season 7, Episode 1 (Punchy’s Wedding).
While Ted and Robin puff cigars at Punchy’s wedding, Ted expresses his exasperation with his lonely life. Upon which, Robin responds:
Robin – “Start believing again.”
Ted – “In what, destiny?”
Robin – “Chemistry. If you have chemistry, you only need one other thing. Timing.”-Robin Scherbatsky
Maybe she was talking about Barney, or maybe she was talking about Ted. All we know is that timing plagued Robin and Ted’s relationship the entire show. I guess if the timing was right when they first met, there probably wouldn’t have been any kids for Ted to tell his story to.
Lily’s How I Met Your Mother Quote
Listen to the world, and take the leap…
Watch Lily deliver this epic How I Met Your Mother quote in Season 4, Episode 24 (The Leap).
After Ted’s numerous attempts to become a prolific architect, he fails. Miserably. However, even after receiving a professorship offer, he remains skeptical and frustrated as he always dreamt of being an established architect, not a professor. Lily’s advice paved the way for something new.
Lily – “You can’t design your life like a building. It doesn’t work that way. You just have to live it, and it’ll design itself.”
Ted – “So I should just do nothing?”
Lily – “Listen to what the world is telling you to do, and take the leap.”-Lily Aldrin
Ted’s professorship eventually leads him to start working with one of his previous firms and build a critically acclaimed skyscraper in New York. Not only that, the mother of his children first noticed Ted in that same university, although he didn’t know that until years later.
Thanks to Lily’s advice, he listened to the universe and took the leap instead of trying to force everything to his plans. For me, this has to be one of the best quotes from How I Met Your Mother. So, listen to what the universe tells you, and things will all work out!
